Understanding Corrosion

Understanding corrosion is the first step to determining the risk it poses in your plant, and the tools available to mitigate it. Almost all substrates exposed to the environment or other substances are at risk of corrosion. To understand how corrosion has an effect on your own plant TCI can help you answer these difficult questions:

  • Why is my plant at risk?
  • What are my risks?
  • Determining ‘CUI’?
  • Determining corrosion exposure risks
  • What are ‘Corrosivity Zones’?

Corrosion Solutions

There are a number of stages involved in developing an effective solution to external corrosion, all of which must ‘dovetail’ to result in a homogeneous engineering solution. Getting the right solution is not always as easy as expected, but with TCI support in developing sound and transparent corrosion solution(s) you should consider the following:

  • Assessment – do I have corrosion risks?
  • Strategy
  • Control methods and mechanisms
  • Prioritisation of risk and maintenance
  • ‘Objective Evidence’ – do I have control of external corrosion?

Control Technologies

There are many forms of corrosion control, some are basic and work at the prevention level, such as protective coatings, some more sophisticated that predict likely corrosion and plan to mitigate those risks. Consider adding these tools and technologies to your 'corrosion prevention toolbox', or discuss with TCI how these can easily be applied in your plant.

  • Corrosion prevention coatings
  • Cathodic protection
  • Inspection assessment
  • Fabric maintenance management
  • External corrosion – ‘Risk Based Management’
  • Plant design management
